| Benoit Delbecq / Tanya Kalmanovitch duo in New York French Canadian pianist/composer Benoit Delbecq and Canadian, now New York-based violist/violinist Tanya Kalmanovitch will perform new music and improvisation for this very special concert and musical meeting of strings at Hudson View Gardens “Lounge” Benoît Delbecq has created his own music using ideas and techniques from contemporary classical (Cage, Ligeti, Nancarrow), jazz, Pygmy polyphony, European improv and other sources. His uniquely dexterous, brainy, evanescent and strangely moving approach to the piano has been likened to a music box one moment, a log drum the next, and a gamelan orchestra , which will surely intrigue listeners ready for new sonic experiences. He improvises on short, overlapping vamps and patterns with a result of a spacious sound that is complex, hardly seeming to emanate from but a single instrument. His appeal is to fans of not only jazz and improvisational music but of new music beyond category. Highly acclaimed in Europe, Delbecq leads or co-leads a number of bands (The Recyclers, Karket, Ambitronix, PianoBook) and has releases on a variety of labels. His most critically acclaimed work are his recordings for Songlines, including his duo collaborations with Vancouver clarinetist Francois Houle and his most recent quintet (featuring saxophonist Mark Turner and bassist Mark Helias). Kalmanovitch performs extensively in North America and Europe, and has travelled frequently to India where she studied Karnatak music with violinist Lalgudi G.H.R. Krishnan and veena player Karaikudi S. Subrmanian.
