Benoit Delbecq / Tanya Kalmanovitch duo in New York

French Canadian pianist/composer Benoit Delbecq and Canadian, now New York-based violist/violinist Tanya Kalmanovitch will perform new music and improvisation for this very special concert and musical meeting of strings at Hudson View Gardens “Lounge”

Benoît Delbecq has created his own music using ideas and techniques from contemporary classical (Cage, Ligeti, Nancarrow), jazz, Pygmy polyphony, European improv and other sources. His uniquely dexterous, brainy, evanescent and strangely moving approach to the piano has been likened to a music box one moment, a log drum the next, and a gamelan orchestra , which will surely intrigue listeners ready for new sonic experiences. He improvises on short, overlapping vamps and patterns with a result of a spacious sound that is complex, hardly seeming to emanate from but a single instrument. His appeal is to fans of not only jazz and improvisational music but of new music beyond category. Highly acclaimed in Europe, Delbecq leads or co-leads a number of bands (The Recyclers, Karket, Ambitronix, PianoBook) and has releases on a variety of labels. His most critically acclaimed work are his recordings for Songlines, including his duo collaborations with Vancouver clarinetist Francois Houle and his most recent quintet (featuring saxophonist Mark Turner and bassist Mark Helias). Two of his releases have received the Chocs de l’nnee (accorded the 12 best French jazz releases of the year) from the influential magazine Jazzman, and one was selected by Jazzman's critics as one of the 50 outstanding records of the '90s.

”...[Delbecq] brilliantly illustrates the care, craft, and attention to detail that are crucial to successfully negotiating contemporary improvised music...In essence, simultaneously constructing a language and holding a conversation.” -Fanfare

”… [His] music is by turns quiet and crystalline, dramatic and vigorous, suggesting alternate landscapes, from childhood dreams to unspeakable tragedies.” —Downbeat

Tanya Kalmanovitch was nominated one of AllAboutJazz-New York's “Best New Talents” last year, as she operates at the intersection of contemporary jazz, classical music and free improvisation, achieving a remarkable synthesis between composition and improvisation. A formidable classical performer, she is fast building an international reputation as an innovator on the viola, bringing its rich, malleable tone into the realms of contemporary jazz. Kalmanovitch performs extensively in North America and Europe, and has travelled frequently to India where she studied Karnatak music with violinist Lalgudi G.H.R. Krishnan and veena player Karaikudi S. Subrmanian. She has also performed with a diverse range of artists including Myra Melford, the Turtle Island String Quartet, and SEM Ensemble.

”The original [John McLaughlin] Mahavishnu Orchestra and the Dixie Dregs are obvious musical reference points.” -Downbeat

”...[She] only recently made the move to New York and is already creating quite a splash. Nominated as one of AllAboutJazz-New York's 'Best New Talents' of 2004, expect to hear her name and music more as time goes by.” -AllAboutJazz-New York
