| Marty Ehrlich CD release party at the Jazz Standard 9/15-18 On September 15-18 the Marty Ehrlich Sextet will be celebrating the release of Marty's second CD for Palmetto Records at the Jazz Standard in New York City. The final night of this weekend will be the world premiere of a piece written by Marty Ehrlich for the Dark Woods Five. The Marty Ehrlich sextet features James Zollar on trumpet and flugelhorn; Howard Johnson on tuba and baritone sax; James Weidman on piano and melodica; Greg Cohen on bass; and Allison Miller on drums. Ray Anderson will replace Howard Johnson on September 15th. The 8 original compositions on News on the Rail traverse a landscape that is not easily defined by any one musical style. Ehrlich has been lauded as one of the “most versatile jazz musicians of the last 30 years.” He brings all this experience to bear in this recording, fashioning a musical synthesis that is powerful and unique. Ehrlich says: “ I worked hard to shape the musical worlds of these pieces, each unique to each other but of a part. I loved having the range of instruments to compose for, from tuba to melodica to trumpet, and these wonderfully expressive musicians to bring the writing to light.” After hearing the sextet featured on News on the Rail, Ben Ratliff of the NEW YORK TIMES wrote: “Marty Ehrlich's sextet developed post-1960's ideas of jazz arrangement…touching down in the soul of the music's mainstream.” The Dark Woods Five World Premiere will feature Mark Feldman on violin; Alan Jaffe on guitar; Erik Friedlander on cello; and Mark Helias on bass. write your comments about the article :: © 2005 Jazz News :: home page |
