BET Jazz and Concord Music Group Partner on New Projects

BET Jazz and the Concord Music Group announce programming and promotional plans for five-time Grammy® nominee Nnenna Freelon and three of the label's newly signed jazz artists, Erin Boheme, Christian Scott and Taylor Eigsti.

Ms. Freelon will be the subject of a 30-minute special to debut on Tuesday, September 20 , following the release of her new CD, Blueprint of a Lady - Sketches of Billie Holiday (Concord Records, August 23), a collection of boldly fresh interpretations of tunes strongly associated with “Lady Day.” The BET Jazz special captures Freelon discussing her homage to the legendary jazz singer, as well as her involvement with a recent multi-media performance at Jacob's Pillow (Lee, Massachusetts). Titled Blueprint of a Lady: The Once and Future Life of Billie Holiday, this collaboration of music, dance and image brings together noted Choreographer Ronald K. Brown's EVIDENCE and videographer / filmmaker Robert Penn. States Freelon, “Billie was sensual, powerful, and above all genuine and she really sang what she had to say in her own way.”

As a featured artist, Ms. Freelon has had a long and productive association with BET on three previous specials including, two Jazz Central productions hosted by Lou Rawls and Ramsey Lewis, and the Kennedy Center Women in Jazz Conference. She was also recently filmed at the 9th Jazz Journalists Awards at B.B. King's Blues Club and Grill performing selections from the new album which will air on BET Jazz Tuesday, September 13 at 8PM and midnight (ET).

Concord and BET Jazz will also partner on a project featuring 18-year old jazz singer Erin Boheme, the New Orleans trumpeter Christian Scott (aged 22), and the 20-year old pianist Taylor Eigsti, all new to the label. These three unassuming young lions for the new century will perform this November at Dizzy's Club Coca-Cola and the Third Annual Anguilla Tranquility Jazz Festival. Both events will be filmed for 30-minute specials to air on BET Jazz, with a promotion running on BET.com for an all expenses paid trip to the Anguilla Jazz Festival.

States Cybelle Brown, VP of Sales and Marketing for BET Jazz and BET Event Productions, “Concord Records is an ideal partner, producing a rich tradition of classic artists and forward thinking young individuals. Their reach into the jazz and consumer marketplace has shown tremendous growth in recent years and we anticipate a myriad of mutually beneficial opportunities ahead.”
