Mario Pavone to Perform at New York's Barbés and 55 Bar

Veteran bassist/composer Mario Pavone, who celebrated his 40th anniversary in music earlier this year, announced two upcoming New York performances featuring a variety of new sidemen and new original music. The Mario Pavone Quintet (feat. Mario Pavone, bass/composer; Mike DiRubbo, alto saxophone; Jimmy Greene, tenor saxophone; Peter Madsen, keyboards; Gerald Cleaver, drums) will perform at Brooklyn's Barbés in Park Slope on October 5th and the Mario Pavone Septet (feat. Mario Pavone, bass/composer; Joe Magnarelli, trumpet; Mike DiRubbo, alto saxophone; Lauren Sevian, baritone saxophone; Peter McEachern, trombone; Peter Madsen, Fender Rhodes; Gerald Cleaver, drums)will perform two days later at 55 Bar on October 7th.

Bassist/composer Mario Pavone has collaborated with both legendary innovators and today's most respected young musicians to consistently define the cutting edge of jazz for the past 40 years. Critics have called his music “exceptional” (AllAboutJazz.com), “full of smart, angular swagger” (Signal to Noise), and “masterful examples of group interplay” (DownBeat), with the New York Times' Ben Ratliff noting, “His work has never been less than compelling.” After many years as a sideman with the likes of Paul Bley, Anthony Braxton, Thomas Chapin and Bill Dixon, Pavone has crafted a signature sound on 16 recordings as a leader, with a long list of prominent sidemen including Steven Bernstein, Gerald Cleaver, Dave Douglas, Peter Madsen, Tony Malaby, Joshua Redman, George Schuller, Michael Sarin, Craig Taborn, and Matt Wilson among many others. His latest release is 2004's Boom (Playscape Recordings), which was named to best-of-the-year lists in Coda and AllAboutJazz-New York.
