Soprano saxophonist Jane Ira Bloom appears with her electro-acoustic quartet at Dizzy's Club Coca-Cola at Jazz at Lincoln Center's Inaugural Women in Jazz Festival on Wednesday, Sept 28th . Jazz soprano saxophonist Jane Ira Bloom will be performing with the quartet from her recent Artistshare CD “Like Silver, Like Song” as part of Jazz at Lincoln Center's Inaugural Women in Jazz Festival sponsored by Diet Coke. Joining Jane will be long-time band mates Bobby Previte on drums, Jamie Saft on piano & electronic keyboards, and bassist Mark Helias. Recent performances include such diverse venues as MOMA, the Kennedy Center, BAM, Grace Cathedral, the Hayden Planetarium, the San Francisco & Willisau Jazz Festivals, as well as regular NYC engagements at Sweet Rhythm and Tonic with her current quartet. Winner of the 2003 Jazz Journalists Award for soprano sax of the year, the Downbeat International Critics Poll for soprano saxophone, and the Charlie Parker Fellowship for Jazz Innovation, she is the first musician ever commissioned by the NASA Art Program, and was honored to have an asteroid named in her honor by the International Astronomical Union (asteroid 6083janeirabloom). Recent commissions include the Doris Duke New Works grant for “Chasing Paint, ” a series of compositions inspired by Jackson Pollock and the Philadelphia Music Project for the premiere of “Unexpected Light, ” a new collaborative work for jazz quartet and lighting design at the Sedgwick Cultural Center in Philadelphia.
