The Brooklyn Sax Quartet performs live in Brooklyn

The Brooklyn Sax Quartet featuring David Bindman (tenor), Fred Ho (baritone), Sam Newsome (soprano), and Ned Rothenberg (alto), will present a concert of new works on September 24, 2005, at 8 PM, at Spoke the Hub, located at 295 Douglass Street (between 3rd and 4th Avenues) in Brooklyn

The ensemble will present world premieres of compositions by Bindman and Ho, including "Contradiction Blues, " "Yellow Power Yellow Soul, " and new arrangements of Thelonious Monk's "Reflections" and "Ask Me Now." The BSQ follows their CD release and tour of the western US with a performance of new works here at home, with an exciting new line-up and repertoire. Co-leaders David Bindman and Fred Ho are joined by Sam Newsome and Ned Rothenberg. The BSQ's new CD Far Side of Here (OmniTone, www.omnitone.com), released in the spring, follows their debut recording The Way of the Saxophone (Innova, 2001).

Bindman's "Contradiction Blues" begins in a blues form, unfolding with harmonic twists and extended improvisations. Ho's "Yellow Power Yellow Soul" draws on traditional songs from Korea, China, and Japan, and includes a re-make of a Chinese pop tune. The suite pays homage to the struggles for liberation and contributions by Asians in America. New arrangements of Monk's tunes re-work harmonies and rhythms, with the original melodies running as threads throughout, passed around by the four saxophones.

David Bindman leads his own ensemble, has played on numerous recordings, worked in collaboration with poet Tyrone Henderson, and performed with Talking Drums, Wadada Leo Smith, Royal Hartigan, and Kevin Norton, among others.

Fred Ho leads his Afro Asian Music Ensemble and Monkey Orchestra and creates large scale works, including his opera Warrior Sisters, Journey Beyond the West: The New Adventures of Monkey, and most recently his martial arts ballet Voice of the Dragon, that toured 33 cities across the USA in 2003. Ho is also an activist and author.

Sam Newsome leads his group Global Unity, has played with Terrence Blanchard and Donald Byrd, and has developed a unique voice as a soloist on the soprano sax.

Ned Rothenberg leads his group Sync and has long been recognized for his work as soloist and multi-instrumentalist. He played with the BSQ early on and comes back to take over the alto chair.
