| Pianist Dave Burrell Celebrates 65 Years, Performs Duets with Billy Martin This month, pianist/composer Dave Burrell celebrates his 65th birthday. Best known for his remarkable contributions to recordings from saxophonists Archie Shepp, Pharoah Sanders and David Murray, Burrell’s recent accomplishments as a leader are best described by critic Francis Davis: “Burrell crams a century of jazz history into every chugging stride episode and churning dissonance. Encyclopedic as well as eccentric, he’s a living treasure.” On Monday, October 10 at 8pm, Dave Burrell and percussionist Billy Martin (from Medeski, Martin and Wood) will be performing at Ars Nova Workshop’s UPenn Jazz Legacy Series. Burrell, whose album Expansion with bassist William Parker and drummer Andrew Cyrille received the award for #2 Jazz Album of the Year from the Village Voice, will be recording a new album in November for High Two Recordings featuring his new trio with Michael Formanek (Elvis Costello, Tim Berne) and Guillermo Brown (David S. Ware, Matthew Shipp). This trio will premiere on September 11 at The Stone in New York. Abbreviated Biography: Born September 10, 1940, Dave Burrell graduated from the Berklee College of Music in 1965. He has contributed to over 125 recordings including pivotal works such as Archie Shepp's “Attica Blues, ” Pharoah Sanders' “Tauhid, ” Marion Brown's “Three for Shepp” and Grammy Award winner David Murray's “Lovers” and “Ballads.” A recipient of the Pew Fellowship in Jazz Composition, Dave Burrell's Master Classes include Conservatoire Municipal, New York University and the University of Pennsylvania. Recent releases include his performance at Vision Festival 2002 on Thirsty Ear Records, the reissue of “After Love” (Universal Records) with Roscoe Mitchell and Alan Silva.
