2nd Annual Goshen Jazz Fest., Sat., Sept. 17 at the Goshen Historic Track

The 2nd Annual Goshen Jazz Festival, hosted by the Rotary Club of Goshen will feature Pucho And His Latin Soul Brothers and Judi Silvano's Let Yourself Go Septet on the Main Stage at the Goshen Historic Track on Saturday, September 17. Bass Artisan Christopher Dean Sullivan will MC. The Goshen Jazz Festival was founded by The Rotary Club of Goshen and inspired by jazz great Willie The Lion Smith, who was born and raised in Goshen. The charitable festival will celebrate the life and legacy of the legend who ignited the jazz world in the 1920s with his piano style known as The Harlem Stride. Proceeds from the festival will fund a music scholarship in Smith’s memory, to be awarded to an outstanding jazz musician from the Hudson Valley, thus perpetuating the legacy of America's Classical Music - JAZZ. Last year's scholarship recipient was Brian J. Walters, who will be attending Miami State University this fall. Corporate sponsorship and ticket sales will underwrite the Goshen Jazz Festival.

Orange County Executive Edward Diana issued a proclamation declaring September 17th Willie The Lion Smith Day in Orange County, the date of the first annual Goshen Jazz Festival. The festival is endorsed by Goshen officials, as well as the Goshen Chamber of Commerce and local merchants. West Main Street will be closed for a street festival featuring artists during the afternoon portion of the festival. There will be free jazz performances during the daytime portion of the event (see schedule below for artists and venues). From afternoon into the evening, from local venues to the main stage, jazz will ring out from every corner of Goshen! Less than 60 miles from New York City, at the crossroads of two major highways - Routes 17 and 84, the city of Goshen is continuing to answer the call to bring world class jazz entertainment to the Hudson Valley.

About the Artists: With 20 recordings to his credit and an honored spot in The International Latin Music Hall of Fame, Pucho And His Latin Soul Brothers bridge the gap between Latin, jazz, soul, funk and even acid jazz; in the early '90s, Pucho's back catalog began to generate interest in Britain, where he was a hit with the acid-jazz crowd! Described as eclectic and sometimes too open to outside influences, Henry Pucho Brown has always remained true to the original spirit of jazz, keeping the music moving forward in the tradition of Miles and Dizzy. Bring your dancing shoes - you won't be able to sit still for this set!

With six recordings to her credit, including 1997's Vocalise on the Blue Note label, vocalist Judi Silvano has led multiple vocal groups from Voices of Juniper to Voices Together, won numerous awards and grants, has been named as one of the Top 10 Vocalists in Down Beat magazine three times, has held a post as a jazz journalist/columnist (All About Jazz) and has been the subject of an original composition (Sketches for Silvano by Lori Dobbins). Ms. Silvano has been featured at a multitude of festivals and concert houses around the globe, including the Caramoor, Montreal, Paris, London, Verona, Perugia, Istanbul and North Sea Jazz Festivals, as well as the JVC Jazz Festival in NY. Let yourself go with Judi as she presents her Let Yourself Go Septet at the Goshen Jazz Festival this year -- from her recording of the same name, dedicated to her mom for her 80th birthday. With killer arrangements by Michael Abene for the all-star little big band, the septet features Ingrid Jensen on trumpet, Steve Slagle on saxophones, Dan Silverman on trombone, Roberta Picket on piano, Chip Jackson on bass, Newman Taylor-Baker on drums and Judi Silvano on vocals!

Bass artisan Christopher Dean Sullivan is a versatile bassist of many musical languages. Chris can be heard on many recordings spanning a myriad of styles with artists Stanlet Jordan, Barbara Sfraga, Odean Pope, Carl Grubbs, Newman Taylor Baker, Archie Shepp and more. His own project, co-led with soundrhythium Michael T.A. Thompson -- Center Search Quest -- can be heard on 2003's Language of Swans (Drimala), on the soon to be released Timelessness Frozen in Time, (Barbara Sfraga & Center Search Quest), as well as the upcoming CSQ Project. Chris has hosted his own award winning television show The Tree of Arts Alive, led his own production companies and is the world's premier advocate for bringing Entertainment back into Jazz...
