| Y'All of New York Presents "Something is Coming, Again" October 21st On Friday, October 21st, the nonprofit organization Y'All of New York, Inc. will present “Something is Coming, Again, ” a musical celebration of longtime jazz supporter Katherine Cox by Founder/Artistic Director James Jabbo Ware and The Me We & Them Orchestra with special guest George Coleman at St. Peter's Church in Manhattan. The concert will feature original compositions from Mr. Ware and pianist Hilton Ruiz, including music from the group's new live CD, Vignettes in the Spirit of Ellington (Y'All 005). ”Imagine the '30s Basie band playing in a '60s post-hard bop manner, ” writes JazzTimes reviewer Kalamu ya Salaam. “Also imagine the soloists employing tone colors, mutes and idiosyncratic flourishes which were the hallmark of Ellington. You've got an idea of composer/conductor Jabbo Ware's orchestra.” Cadence reviewer Jack Bower adds, The Me We & Them Orchestra “is, if nothing else, wide-ranging and eclectic with echoes of Ellington, Lunceford, Mingus, Basie, New Orleans street music and even Sun Ra and Rahsaan Roland Kirk resonating through its seemingly all-embracing repertoire.” The Me We & Them Orchestra, Y'All of New York's resident ensemble, was founded in 1973 by Mr. Ware, a veteran of the Black Artist Group of St. Louis and ensembles led by Albert King, Sam Rivers, Dollar Brand, Archie Shepp and Charles Mingus among many others. He would go on to also found Y'All of New York, Inc. in 1990 to support the composition, development, promotion and preservation of creative music. The 501(c)(3) charitable organization is dedicated to advancing jazz traditions, today and tomorrow, by producing performances, recordings and educational programs throughout the greater New York City community and beyond. This fundraising event will also showcase the organization's work with young students at a local community arts school, as they join the adult players to perform some of the music on the program. write your comments about the article :: © 2005 Jazz News :: home page |
