The Stryker-Slagle Band at Iridium

The Stryker / Slagle Band appearing One Night Only at the Iridium Jazz Club Aug. 24th.
Guitarist Dave Stryker and saxophonist Steve Slagle are a rarity in jazz having stuck together while developing a group sound for close to 20 years. They have just recorded their first live CD entitled “Live at the Jazz Standard” due in the fall on the Zoho Music label. In the meantime they will also be playing music from Stryker's brand new CD “Big City” (Mel Bay Records).

Guitarist Dave Stryker has 18 CD's out as a leader and has been a sideman on over 40 others. He got his start with Organist Jack McDuff, before becoming Stanley Turrentine's guitarist for over 13 years. He was recently voted a Rising Star Guitarist in the 2004 Downbeat Critics poll.

Saxophonist Steve Slagle has 10 CD's out as a leader and has been a sideman on many other's having performed with Machito, Charlie Haden, Carla Bley, Joe Lovano, the Mingus Big Band, and many more.

…It was apparent in the first few numbers of their opening set Tuesday at the Jazz Bakery that Stryker's guitar work and Slagle's saxophone playing were the products of first-rate jazz talents. Often tossing riffs back and forth and breaking into high-speed unison passages, they were an impressive pair. After more than a decade of working together, their musical communication now reaches beyond empathetic and into symbiotic swinging. Don Heckman-LA Times
