| Pat Metheny adds David Sánchez to his 2005 Trio Tour After playing a searing set with saxophonist David Sánchez at Montreal's International Jazz Festival a few weeks ago, Pat really wanted to continue the musical dialogue. “It was a fantastic set, ” Metheny says; “We were all having so much fun playing off each other. I knew that my next tour in the fall had to have as many dates with David as possible.” After rejigging schedules, what was to be a Pat Metheny Trio Tour with Christian McBride and Antonio Sanchez will now become a Trio & Quartet tour on all but four dates. ”We will mix it up, as usual, some tunes as a Trio, some as a Quartet, extended duet sections, and more, ” says Metheny. “I like to explore the full gamut of possibilities...as many possibilities as possible. With David's saxophone in the mix we have a full palette to work from and there's a good number of songs we can pull back into the repertoire. With the four of us together on stage, watch out.” David Sánchez is well known to the jazz cognoscenti for his mix of straight-ahead jazz with Afro-Latin influences. His breakout album, OBSESIÓN, produced by Branford Marsalis for Columbia Records, garnered Sanchez his first Grammy nomination in 2001. Born in Puerto Rico, Sanchez was steeped in the bomba and plena rhythms of the island along with the Cuban and Brazilian traditions, while the saxophonists Sonny Rollins, Dexter Gordon, John Coltrane and Charlie Parker deeply influenced his playing. After moving to the United States in 1998, Sanchez was sought out by Dizzy Gillespie, Eddie Palmieri, Charlie Haden and Gonzalo Rubalcaba. After touring the world with those jazz legends, and under his own name, Sánchez has become a known force in the jazz world for his ability to bring all his influences together to create organic and potent performances.
