| The Rhythms of the World Festival (September 2005 ) The Rhythms of the World Festival, a non-profit organization aiming to promote cultural diversity, will be presenting its second Montreal edition in the Quartier International, downtown and its surroundings. The event will take place from September 7 to 11, 2005. Under the theme "Cultural Harmony", the Rhythms of the World Festival will showcase its program through these three forms: performing arts, visual arts and culinary arts. Events will be held over a four-day period with each day representing the different continents of Asia, Europe, Africa and the Americas. The fifth and final day of the festival, on September 11, will be a family day devoted to embracing cultural harmony. Every night, shows featuring Sara Franco (rhythms of Europe), Beat in Fractions (rhythms of Asia), Rude Beats (rhythms of Europe), Arden Arapyan Trio (rhythms of Europe), Wesley and the African Project (rhythms of Africa), Harold Faustin Quintet and special guest Samina (rhythms of Africa) and Los Tumbadores (rhythms of the Americas) will be presented at the House of Jazz. Happy hour events will take place at Le Quartier restaurant in the Quartier International and will feature DJs spinning Buddha lounge beats and Tranzit with their modern Haitian kompa sounds, as well as a number of other visual artists. The Rhythms of the World's Gala of Flavours will be held on September 8 at the Centre Mont-Royal and will showcase the talents of the dancers of the world-reknown Arthur Murray Dance School. For the same occasion, an exhibit of art work by Marc Seguin, Heidi Hollinger, Dana Velan and Michel Vermeulen will also take place. Finally, on September 11, a day appropriate for celebrating peace, is Cultural Harmony Day where parents and children are invited to partake in the many outdoor activities such as the arts and crafts, dance and cooking workshops as well as the BBQ of international flavours and several musical performances including one by Zuruba, a group of afro-brasilian percussionists. Being held in the Place du Canada park (corner Peel and Rene-Levesque), this harmonious day will end with a uplifting closing show highlighting Jocelyne Leger and her afro-caribbean dancers, Isangano (a Rwandan dance troupe) and S.H.A.R.(O).N. with 3 Shades of Soul featuring Tamara Brown (a hybrid of blues, funk and Caribbean sounds). During 'Gallery Week' many artists will be presenting their work at Studio 261 and at galleries 1225, Simon Blais, Hollinger Collins, and Art en majuscule throughout the Festival. The success of last year's very first edition of the Rhythms of the World Festival ranked the event as one of the 'top 6' festivals of the summer in the Journal de Montreal. As a result, for the 2005 edition of the festival, the Quartier International, downtown and its surrounding areas will be at the heart of all the festival action and will be livened up for everybody to discover, experience and embrace Montreal's multiculturalism. The Rhythms of the World Festival's mission is to foster comprehension and harmony between cultures through the lens of social and cultural activities in order to nurture the development, to promote and to widely expose visual, performing and culinary arts.
