The Comcast San Jose Jazz Festival's Newest Stage 'Jazz Beyond'

Signifying a new trend in jazz and modern music, the San Jose Jazz Society today announced the complete lineup for the new "Jazz Beyond" stage at the 16th Annual Comcast San Jose Jazz Festival, presented by Southwest. Jazz Beyond is a unique fusion of contemporary jazz, electronic music, DJ turntables and music sampling. Jazz Beyond is one of nine stages at the 2005 Jazz Festival, which annually attracts more than 165, 000 to downtown San Jose, California for the four day event (August 11-14, 2005). Jazz Beyond is two days only, Friday August 12, and Saturday August 13, at the San Jose Repertory Theater from 8:00 pm to 1:30 am.

"San Jos is the epicenter of Silicon Valley, the heart of innovation and discovery. It only makes sense that the San Jose Jazz Society is the first to present a totally unique and progressive group of artists on one stage, " said Michelle Amador, performer and artistic director of Jazz Beyond. "What better way to see some of the modern innovators in jazz today, all at an unbeatable price: free!"

Friday, August 12
-- 8 pm: Michelle Amador & the True Believers. "Silken-voiced" (SF Chronicle) vocalist/composer Michelle Amador leads this electronic-jazz-funk-hip-hop hybrid septet performing her original compositions. Amador also serves as Artistic Director of Jazz Beyond. Michelle Amador (vocals), Tim Bulkley (drums/sampler), John Shifflett (bass), Dr Lou (dj/effects), Dayna Sean Stephens (sax), Justin Morell (guitar/effects), Leonard Thompson (nord electro keyboard).
-- 10 pm: Jason Moran and the Bandwagon Pianist/composer Jason Moran has garnered international acclaim for his progressive approach to performing and
composing within the traditional instrumental jazz setting. With several albums on the Blue Note label, Moran continues to breathe fresh life into the creation of jazz music.
-- 12:00 am Kosmic Renaissance. This trio pushes jazz to the edge with tabla drumming, live saxophone and saxophone looping, and groundbreaking emceeing using the newest in technology, the Vestax Faderboard, developed by Kosmic Renaissance artist Shing02. David Boyce (sax), Sameer Gupta (tabla), Shing02 (emcee).

Saturday, August 13
-- 8 pm: Wally Schnalle - The Suit. Drummer/composer Wally Schnalle leads this cutting-edge quartet of live drum & laptop electronics, guitar, keyboard, and acoustic and electric bass. Performing the music from his latest release, "The Suit, " Schnalle seeks to expand and inform the jazz continuum. Wally Schnalle (drums), Jeff Massanari (guitar), Jeff Pittson (keys), Peter Barshay (acoustic & electric bass).
-- 10 pm: The Bad Plus. This wildly popular piano trio has swept the jazz world by storm, drawing praise with their complex original compositions and interpretations of classic rock tunes like "Ironman" and "Heart of Glass." An era-defining band.
-- 12:00 am: Mark de Clive-Lowe. Pianist/producer/dj Mark de Clive-Lowe leads a quintet utilizing Rhodes keyboard, Akai drum machines, electric guitar, live drums, and vocals by popular electronic genre vocalists Bembe Segue & OvaSoul7 to perform music from his new CD, "Tides Arising" on the ABB Soul record label. A major figure in the nu-jazz movement, De Clive-Lowe is leading the way in bringing the worlds of jazz and electronic music together.
