Mavis Staples is back in the headlines

Legendary soul/gospel singer Mavis Staples is back in the headlines, with a recent appearance at the Jammy Awards held at Madison Square Garden in New York City. Staples sat in with the North Mississippi All Stars before joining Umphrey's McGee, Sinead O'Connor and Huey Lewis for a rousing rendition of the Staple Singers' classic, “I'll Take You There.”

On Wednesday, May 04, 2005, Staples' “Have A Little Faith” will be heard on the WB television program “Jack & Bobby.” The song is the title track from her critically acclaimed Alligator CD. Staples, the song, and the CD are nominated for W.C. Handy Awards, which will be given out by the Blues Foundation on Thursday, May 5, in Memphis. Staples will be present and will perform during the event.

And in an honor unlike any other, the City of Chicago will present Staples with a proclamation declaring Sunday, June 12 “Mavis Staples Day” throughout Chicago. That evening, Staples will headline the annual Chicago Blues Festival.
