| Announcing Brubeck Festival 2005, April 4-11 STOCKTON, CA - The Brubeck Festival 2005 is shaping up to be a truly historic event, presenting the work of legendary pianist and composer Dave Brubeck, as well as new compositions by artists he has inspired, in diverse settings – from symphonic pieces to chamber music, small-group and big-band jazz, to ballet and academic symposia. Marking its fourth anniversary with an array of world-class artists in five venues, the Brubeck Festival celebrates diversity, crossing musical and performance boundaries and reflecting Brubeck's deeply held values. Six of the Brubeck Festival's eight days will take place in Stockton , California , home to the University of the Pacific (alma mater of Dave and Iola Brubeck, his wife and collaborator of over 60 years) and the Brubeck Institute. Several of Stockton 's leading cultural institutions are presenting partners of the Festival, including the Pacific Conservatory of Music, Brubeck Institute, Stockton Symphony, Professional Organization for Performing Artists (POPA), and Associated Students of the University of the Pacific (ASUOP). In addition, Dave Brubeck returns to his other alma mater, Oakland 's Mills College , for a special evening of music. The Festival concludes with an evening at Yoshi's Jazz House, the renowned jazz club in Oakland, California . In addition to Mr. Brubeck, who appears on April 8 and 10, some of the stellar musicians performing at the Festival include Christian McBride (celebrated bassist and artistic director of the Brubeck Institute), Chris Brubeck (trombonist, bassist, and one of Dave's sons), Dan Brubeck (drummer, and another of Dave's sons), and clarinetist Bill Smith . Among the featured ensembles will be The SFJAZZ Collective (an all-star unit featuring Joshua Redman , Nicholas Payton , Bobby Hutcherson , Renee Rosnes , et al.), The Stockton Symphony Orchestra ( Peter Jaffe , Conductor), Ballet NY (performing the Points on Jazz ballet by Dave Brubeck), The New Brubeck Octet , The Talujon Percussion Quartet (with special guest Daniel Kennedy ), The Brubeck Institute Jazz Sextet , The Pacific Jazz Ensemble , The Young Sounds of San Joaquin , and The Joe Gilman Trio celebrating the release of their latest CD: Time Again - Brubeck Revisited Volume 2 . A broad range of repertoire will prevail at the Brubeck Festival, varying as much as the ensembles themselves. What other festival has a percussion ensemble, a ballet company, a big band, a commissioned world premiere by a symphony, small combos, world-renowned jazz musicians, student groups, a string quartet, cutting edge electronic music, instrumental masterclasses and academic symposia? No other festival has the broad scope of events and intellectual power that the Brubeck Festival has--all involving one of the “royal families” of jazz, the Brubecks.
