Milan Records will release Hot Club de France

On March 29, 2005, Milan Records will release Hot Club de France – a selection of some of the Paris jazz club’s finest musical performances. Including jazz, blues, ragtime, gospel and more – this record compiles some of the finest moment from musicians that helped define the genre.

Jazz, along with rock & roll, is considered to be one of the most truly American genres of music. In the 1930’s, while still in its infancy, jazz was not looked upon as a serious art form. At best, jazz was thought of as light entertainment for the black community. In Europe however, and especially in Paris, the literary and artistic community immediately embraced “this crazy hot new music” from America. Records and information were traded, an underground community of jazz-lovers began to grow, and Hot Club de France was born.

Begun as a sort of appreciation society for jazz fans, Hot Club issued newsletters, sponsored radio broadcasts of American jazz performers, filmed live performances, issued records through an underground network, and organized the first jazz concerts in France. Due to the enthusiasm in Europe for their music, as well as the racial climate in the U.S., performers such as Louis Armstrong, Memphis Slim, Willie (The Lion) Smith, and others soon found a home with the Hot Club Society in Paris. The first HCF concert was held in a small Parisian record store, but by they late 1940’s, HCF was booking jazz tours and festivals around the world.

Milan Records has waded through the HCF recordings to discover gems spanning 30 years. Digitally restored and remastered, these recordings can now be heard with the brilliance and emotion in a way unlike ever before. This record presents a glimpse into American Jazz music in Paris, capturing some of the most remarkable moments that defined jazz music for decades there, and in fact, defined jazz music for the world.
