MICHAL COHEN'S HENNA PROJECT

Michal Cohen's Henna Project has been performing in North America and internationally since the release of their acclaimed debut album in early 2004. The Henna project has been described by Matthew Wells, BBC, as: “Breathtaking songs of the ancient desert come alive.
Beautiful ancient Yemenite melodies and modern electronic beats give the Henna project a unique sound under the soaring vocals of Michal Cohen. This versatile award-winning singer and composer brings alive the ancient songs of her Middle-East Yemenite culture with energy and passion.” All of Henna’s members are internationally known musicians: Frederik Rubens - Guitar and Programming, Fernando Isella – Keyboard and Samplers, Ben Zwerin - Bass, Yuval Lion - Drums, and Mathias Kunzli - Percussion. This performance at Piano's will be filmed for an upcoming documentary by Israeli filmmaker – Tali Shochat.

Michal Cohen’s unique, powerful sound and versatility have brought her to many stages around the world. She has performed at concert halls, clubs and festivals in Israel, the US, Canada, Mexico and the Far East such as Festival Del Desierto, the Ottawa World Music Festival, Merkin Hall, Scullers Jazz Club, Joe’s Pub, The Knitting Factory, Philadelphia Museum of Art, Satalla and the Anav Music Center. This year sees the launch of her Henna CD: a fusion of ancient Yemenite songs and electronic beats that enhances her growing reputation as a unique talent on the World Music scene. Michal’s family comes from Yemen, but she was born and raised in Israel and was influenced musically by both of these cultures. She lives in New York and performs an exciting range of musical styles from ancient Yemenite to modern jazz.
