| Gato Barbieri At The Iridium Jazz Club Nov. 11-14 Argentinian saxophonist Gato Barbieri (b. 1934) developed a full-throated, passionate tone combining the energy of John Coltrane's saxophone innovations and the romantic melodicisim of South American folk music. He began his career playing with Lalo Schifrin in Argentina and Brazil, then moved into the throes of commitment to the free jazz movement, joining Don Cherry's lineup for Complete Communion and swinging for the outside fence on the ESP session. He went on to experiment in a duet setting with Dollar Brand/Abdullah Ibrahim on Confluence. Barbieri then made a series of albums that explored the roots of his own musical and cultural/political history, beginning with The Third World and following with Bolivia, El Pampero and the stirring Under Fire.
