BOBBY COTTONWOOD :: SINGS JAZZ STANDARDS with Joe Bonner SMILE
by Ron Sagye La Rue

Cottonwood Music

Bobby Cottonwood:Vocals
Joe Bonner: Piano

When listening to any artist especially a singer, one must like the sound they produce. Bobby Cottonwood has a strong voice no doubt. Here then is another drummer, who believes he should sing. Buddy Rich,Shelly Manne, and Grady Tate have made that leap as well.
Cottonwood one this CD sings standards with the accompaniment of pianist Joe Bonner. Probably best known for working with Pharoah Sanders among others. Throughout the CD there is to much echo, from the opening track "The Way You Look Tonight" thru "Mona Lisa" to 'Round Midnight". Ten tunes round out this recording, but for this reviewer its a challenge to relate to Cottonwood's voice.

Bonner's piano sound leaves something to be desired. Was the tuning to his liking or was it tuned at all? But Bonner does take some nice solos on "Waltz For Debby" and 'Round Midnight. If still interested... cottonwoodmusic@webtv.net or 928-300-9396 in USA
