Mindstorm Interactive Surface Has the X Factor

The X Factor recently returned to ITV1 to entertain the British public with brave wannabe pop stars battling it out in front of its panel of formidable judges Simon Cowell, Louis Walsh, Dannii Minogue and Cheryl Cole.

The show, now in its sixth year, has undergone a major change in format this year. Auditions now take part in front of live audiences and those who are chosen are whittled down to just 24 acts using Mindstorm multi-touch, interactive technology at the bootcamp stage.

The producers of The X Factor came to Mindstorm for help creating a unique feature in the show using Mindstorm's multi-touch interactive surface technology. A bespoke table was created especially for the show by Mindstorm. The judging panel Simon Cowell, Louis Walsh, Dannii Minogue and Cheryl Cole use the interactive table at bootcamp, to decide who goes through to the next round.

Using The X Factor branded Mindstorm interactive multi-touch table (the Mindstorm Aurora), the judges were able to store digital photographs of all the contestants within the four categories girls, boys, over 25s and groups. The Mindstorm interactive table enabled them to look at multiple digital photographs of the contestants, expand photographs as they discussed one particular contestant, and then use the technology to place them in YES, NO or MAYBE categories. The judging panel were also able to move photographs of contestants around the interactive multi touch table simultaneously and move contestants easily from one category to another, should they disagree.
