| ntl:Telewest Business Selected by 97 Schools ntl:Telewest Business has been selected by 97 schools through the Hillingdon Grid for Learning to connect primary, secondary and nursery schools across the area. The high speed network, part of a five-year contract, will enable almost 60,000 staff and students to access e-learning facilities such as interactive exam revision applications (SAM Learning) and video-rich teaching resources (Espresso). The Hillingdon Grid for Learning (HGfL) works to deliver quality ICT outcomes for schools, and is a founding member of the London Grid for Learning (LGfL). This collaborative initiative was launched in 2000 by London's Local Authorities to provide broadband connectivity, managed services, on-line content and e-learning tools to the region's education community. In order to deliver these services to schools across Hillingdon, the second largest of London's 32 boroughs, the HGfL requires resilient, high-speed connectivity to all of its schools' locations. With increasing amounts of data being transported over the network and schools' needs extending from just email and web browsing to multimedia applications and video conferencing, HGfL's legacy network could no longer provide the bandwidth and scalability required. To replace its current leased line circuits and roll-out the robust network it required, HGfL turned to ntl:Telewest Business. The company deployed a high-speed Metro Ethernet VPN network, connecting Hillingdon's 97 nursery, primary and secondary schools. The new network ensures that capacity can be increased as and when it is required from either 10 to 100Mbps in 10 megabit increments or 100 Mbps to 1Gbps or higher in 100 megabit increments. With this high speed connectivity, HGfL can now ensure that sites have access to web-based content and e-learning and teaching resources such as SAM Learning, an online subscription services that provides revision exercises and test-style questions for Key Stage 2, Key Stage 3 and GCSE, and Espresso, a digital library of video-rich cross-curricular resources. write your comments about the article :: © 2008 Computing News :: home page |
