IDC: Client Device Management Tool Use Is Widespread in Europe But Many Approaches Lack Maturity and Cost Effectiveness

According to a recent IDC survey, use of tools to manage desktops, notebooks, and mobile devices is widespread in European enterprises. As IT infrastructure continues to grow and diversify in the number and type of devices needing support, client management is becoming critical to controlling and maximizing investment value in IT infrastructure.

Although client management practices were present in 90% of enterprises surveyed, many enterprises faced problems delivering value through their approaches and were plagued with high costs in basic management tasks such as inventory, patch deployment, software deployment, and asset management.

"Driven by increasing concerns over security, compliance, and IT complexity, client device management is an issue that is not only on the minds of IT infrastructure executives, but also IT directors, CIOs, and business stakeholders", said Matthew McCormack, consultant, European Systems Group. "Client device management tools and practices are widespread but enterprises continue to face big challenges in gaining real value and savings because of high integration costs and suboptimal success rates."

In 2008, client device management will continue to play an important role in the framework of IT infrastructure management, and new solutions aim to correct many of the old problems of the past such as interoperability with other infrastructure and security tools.

The IDC study European Client Management Trends highlights the main findings of a survey conducted on client management. IDC fielded the survey in 2007 and interviewed 150 IT executives from across Europe, asking about infrastructure spending, vendor solutions, and client management use and effectiveness.
