| Truphone Brings Internet Phone Calls to The Cloud's Hotspots Now, owners of the latest generation of Wi-Fi-equipped mobile phones can make calls from any of The Cloud's 7,500 public Wi-Fi hotspots in the UK. Truphone is free software that enables Wi-Fi-equipped Nokia mobile phones to make internet-rate phone calls (VoIP calls) over Wi-Fi connections. When the phone is not in Wi-Fi range it reverts to being a normal mobile phone, so people need only one phone. An agreement between Truphone and The Cloud means a Truphone-enabled mobile phone can now make internet-rate calls whenever it's in range of one of The Cloud's hotspots, ensuring its owner is making the cheapest call possible. No passwords or credit card details are required. The Cloud has hotspots across the UK, including Europe's largest public access Wi-Fi network in a business district at Canary Wharf, Manchester city centre, and the imminent City of London Wi-Fi zone. The Cloud is constantly adding new hotspots - recently it announced the addition of 232 Little Chef restaurants. Truphone calls from The Cloud's hotspots are charged at just 3p/minute more than Truphone's extraordinarily low standard published rates. Example Truphone call charges from a The Cloud hotspot: - to a USA mobile or landline: 3p/minute - to a Hong Kong mobile or landline: 3p/minute - to a Polish landline: 5.3p/minute (Warsaw 3p/minute). Currently, Truphone is available for Nokia's E60, E61 and E70 mobiles, with a version for the best-selling Nokia N80 also announced. Truphone for other handsets including Windows Mobile devices will follow soon. Owners of other Wi-Fi-equipped mobiles can register to receive an email when Truphone is available for their phone. write your comments about the article :: © 2006 Computing News :: home page |
