Spend Halloween with Scott Robinson's Heliotones at the Jazz Standard

A Halloween Spectacular!
Scott Robinson and the Heliotones to make third annual appearance at the Jazz Standard, Thurs. Oct. 31, 2019

The Jazz Standard - one of NYC's most important and prestigious clubs - has again asked Scott Robinson to present a special Halloween show featuring a sextet of musicians in the spirit of Heliosonic Toneways, his 50th anniversary album celebration of The Heliocentric Worlds of Sun Ra. Besides Robinson on saxophones, unusual woodwinds and brass, theremin, and more, this year's group will include alto saxophonist Godwin Louis, guitarist Bruce Arnold, bassist Julian Thayer, pianist/organist Gary Versace, and drummer Pheeroan akLaff… an extremely eclectic and wide-ranging cast of creative musicians.

The music of Scott Robinson and the Heliotones will combine daring improvisations and original music with fun and grooving Sun Ra tunes, and will be a visual and aural treat for the senses. Scott's astonishing vintage contrabass saxophone, standing nearly seven feet tall, will make a rare appearance… supported by the rolling cart he constructed from WWI-era biplane wheels! There will be a costume contest, and prizes.
The Heliotones Halloween Spectacular was previously selected as a "Concert of the Year" in the New York City Jazz Record. Jersey Jazz called it "both swinging and adventurous... a joyously memorable Halloween." Robinson's previous appearance at the Standard generated a multi-photo spread in the New York Times which called it "an impressive workout... negotiated with staggering agility, " noting that the show "suggested both the spooky theatricality of a Halloween special and the vintage futurism of the Sun Ra Arkestra." This year's Halloween appearance will embody those worlds, and many more.
