Jazz Guitarist Guillaume Muller’s Recording Debut

Guillaume Muller, who has been a fixture on the New York jazz scene since 2016, makes his first statement as a leader on Sketches Of Sound. Even at this early stage, Muller has his own sound and fluent style on guitar, and is a skilled composer. He performs six of his songs and a standard with an impressive combo that also features bassist Gui Duvignau, drummer Josh Bailey and, on some numbers, pianist Jim Funnell and altoist Nino Wenger.
Sketches Of Sound begins with Muller's unaccompanied guitar on "Lullaby For a Capybara, " a peaceful jazz waltz that builds in passion and intensity as it evolves and the other musicians join Muller. The guitarist shows maturity in the construction of his solo and his ability to show tenderness in his playing.

Altoist Wenger takes the lead on the post bop "Brains, " which has a bossa-nova feel before it becomes a straightahead romp. "Blue Ballad" begins as a melancholy ballad but ends quite playful with hints of Thelonious Monk. The advanced "Flying Bison" is an episodic work that will keep listeners guessing, featuring some of the strongest solos of the project.
"The Loop" has a tricky and catchy melody along with heated statements from Muller and Wenger. The standard "Alone Together" is modernized, taken slower than usual, and features close interplay by Muller with bassist Duvignau and drummer Bailey. The enjoyable set concludes with the medium-tempo cooker "Stable Table" which has a new melody and is based on the harmonic progression of Benny Golson's "Stablemates."
Guillaume Muller was born and raised in Paris. He began playing the guitar as a teenager and moved to Boston in 2012 to study at the Berklee College Of Music. After he graduated in 2015, he moved to New York where he has been playing and teaching ever since in addition to earning his Master degree in Jazz Studies from NYU Steinhardt.
The creative guitarist clearly has a great future. Sketches Of Sound gives one the opportunity to hear Guillaume Muller at the beginning of what will certainly be a significant career.
