| Flushing Town Hall Presents N.E.A. Jazz Masters: Speaking in the Language of Jazz on November 16 On Friday, November 16, Flushing Town Hall presents Speaking in the Language of Jazz, a concert with six of America's finest Jazz musicians who are coming together to play on the same stage for the first time. National Endowment for the Arts Jazz Masters Slide Hampton, Barry Harris, Jimmy Cobb, Jimmy Heath, and Jimmy Owens are joined by veteran bassist Paul West for this once-in-a-lifetime show. The annual NEA Jazz Masters concert will showcase the love and friendship between musicians who have devoted their lives to performing and teaching jazz. Each of the artists in this concert have been playing jazz for over 50 years: Slide Hampton (2005 NEA Jazz Master) is a jazz trombonist, composer and arranger, and this will be his first time playing at Flushing Town Hall. He has worked with everyone from Dizzy Gillespie to Paquito D'Rivera, and his countless collaborations with jazz greats were recognized when he won a Grammy Award in 1998 for Best Jazz Arrangement with a Vocalist for his recording with Dee Dee Bridgewater. Described by critics as a master composer, arranger and uniquely gifted trombone player, Hampton's career is among the most distinguished in jazz. A leader of the bebop era, Barry Harris (1989 NEA Jazz Master) is a legendary jazz pianist, bandleader, composer, arranger and educator. He has recorded 19 albums as a lead artist and continues to perform and teach worldwide. When he is not traveling, he holds weekly music workshop sessions in New York City. Jimmy Cobb (2009 NEA Jazz Master) is a jazz drummer, who in addition to being an NEA Jazz Master, is the recipient of the Don Redman Heritage award. One of his most famous works is on Miles Davis's Kind of Blue in 1959, and he has also worked with John Coltrane and Billie Holiday. Over his illustrious career, Jimmy Heath (2003 NEA Jazz Master) has performed on more than 100 albums and with some of the greatest jazz musicians of all time, including Miles Davis, Wynton Marsalis and Dizzy Gillespie. By combining his versatile style of performing and his outstanding writing and arranging abilities, he has set a high standard of accomplishment in the jazz field. Jimmy Owens (2012 NEA Jazz Master) is a jazz trumpeter, composer, arranger, lecturer, and educator who leads his own group, Jimmy Owens Plus. All throughout his musical career, Owens has demonstrated his understanding of the jazz concepts and provided musically emotional atmospheres for ballads. Rounding out the group of legendary musicians is veteran, versatile bassist Paul West. He has performed and recorded with everyone from Ray Charles to Dinah Washington. This concert will feature the musicians favorite jazz selections—it will be a concert of music that they love and cherish. They will delight the audience with the beauty and execution of the selections, showcasing jazz at its best. Flushing Town Hall's 40th Anniversary Challenge Flushing Town Hall has been presented with a significant challenge on the 40th anniversary season of the Flushing Council on Culture and the Arts: if the venue can raise $40, 000 in new or increased donations by February 2019, an anonymous donor will match that with another $40, 000. The challenge applies to any new or increased contributions (and not to any pre-existing financial commitments) from individuals, foundations, and businesses.
