BRIC Jazz Fest, Park Avenue Armory & Nairobi dates!

Dear Music Lovers:

Lots of of exciting Fall news to share!

BRIC JAZZ FEST, 10/19 in Brooklyn
I will be playing with my quintet at this year's BRIC Jazz Fest on Thursday, October 19 alongside Terri Lyne Carrington's Social Science, Sun Ra Arkestra, and other great acts. My band includes Julian Shore (piano), Juancho Herrera (guitar), Bam Bam Rodríguez (bass), and Ferenc Nemeth (drums). Tickets are available here, and admit you to all shows that evening! This will be my band's last show for 2017, so hope to see you there!

PARK AVENUE ARMORY, 11/21
I've been sitting on this one for quite some time, and I'm beyond excited to finally announce that Jason Moran has invited me to take part in his Artist Studio Series at the Park Avenue Armory on November 21. I am a huge admirer of Jason's multidisciplinary work, and it is an immense honor for me to perform in this historic space where many incredible visual and musical artists have come before me. I will be premiering a large-scale composition entitled, "Folk Songs of Naboréa: a songcycle for 7 voices, " which imagines the folk music of a futuristic society. The evening will be a double bill with the inimitable Dominique Eade and Ran Blake; tickets available here.

The Folkalist Blog
I recently started a blog, The Folkalist, documenting my ethnographic research around the world. My latest contribution is a very personal essay, "In Search Of Cesária, " about my time on the island of São Vicente tracing the life and music of the late legend Cesária Évora.

Kenya with Alune Wade
I'll also be going on the road to KENYA!!! later this month to play at the Safaricom Jazz Festival with the amazing Senegalese bassist/singer Alune Wade. Alune has worked with such musicians as Ismaël Lo, Salif Keita, Joe Zawinul, Marcus Miller, and the López-Nussa Brothers, and I'm so excited to join his band as a special guest for this tour.

Carnegie Hall Lullaby Project
Lastly, I'm thrilled to announce that I joined the roster of teaching artists at Carnegie Hall, and I will be an artist-in-residence through June 2018 at a homeless shelter in the Bronx with the inspiring Lullaby Project, which helps young mothers write lullabies for their babies, aiming to foster mother-child bonding.

Always greatful for your support, and hope to see you soon at one of these upcoming shows!!!!
