MPS Records - Trumpet: Enrico Rava, Benny Bailey (Release: August 11th, 2017)

Next digital re-issue bunch is dedicated to the trumpet: Enrico Rava's 1973 MPS outing Katcharpari was his second album as a leader, and already displays the trumpeter as a player at the height of his creative powers. Benny Bailey Sextet - Soul Eyes is one of the series of highly successful live albums MPS produced at Munich's famous Domicile jazz club. Soul Eyes unites four of Europe's best known expatriate American jazz musicians. Benny Bailey and his Orchestra - The Balkan in my Soul is a classy album with a unique slant and Bailey at his inimitable best.

Enrico Rava - Katcharpari //1973

Italian trumpeter Enrico Rava has been a force in the post-bop and avantegarde jazz world since the mid-1960's when he played with soprano sax icon Steve Lacy. Throughout the 70's and 80's he worked with the likes of Gil Evans, Charlie Haden, Archie Shepp, and Cecil Taylor. This 1973 MPS outing was Rava's second album as a leader, and already displays the trumpeter as a player at the height of his creative powers. The quartet includes guitarist John Abercrombie in the early stages of his fabulous career, drummer Chip White, who has been a fixture in the Big Apple since the 70's, and guitarist/bassist Bruce Johnson, whose wide range saw him working with the Beach Boys as well as Gil Evans. Bruce was also teacher of and inspiration to a generation of New York jazz guitarists.

Line-Up: Bruce Johnson (Bass), Chip "Superfly" White (Drums), John Abercrombie (Electric Guitar), Enrico Rava (Trumpet, Vocals, Bells)

Benny Bailey Sextet - Soul Eyes (Jazz Live at the Domicile Munich) //1968

One of the series of highly successful live albums MPS produced at Munich's famous Domicile jazz club, Soul Eyes unites four of Europe's best known expatriate American jazz musicians. Quincey Jones marveled that trumpeter Benny Bailey "has so personal a sound and so completely avoids clichés. Benny is thrillingly himself." Since his move to Europe in the 50's, Bailey worked with a variety of top big bands as well as such legendary players as Dexter Gordon and Eddie Harris.

Line-Up: Jimmy Woode (Bass), Charly Campbell (Congas), Makaya Ntshoko (Drums), Mal Waldron (Piano), Nathan Davis (Tenor Saxophone), Benny Bailey (Trumpet)

Benny Bailey and his Orchestra - The Balkan in My Soul //1968

A big band album centered around American trumpeter Benny Bailey is understandable; Bailey was one of the great stylists on the instrument. But why music with the Balkans as theme? Benny had connections to the area through tours and work with the many top-flight jazz musicians with Balkan roots. There is also a connection between jazz and the polyrhythmic music of the Balkans: both are grounded in the rich musical traditions of Africa, Europe and Asia, and in their own particular ways have swing and a sense of the blues as central features.

Line-Up: Benny Bailey (Trumpet), Don Menza (Tenor Sax),
