The New York City Jazz Record : "Septuagenarian Belgian guitarist Philip Catherine's work with Stephane Grappelli, Larry Coryell, Charles Mingus, Jean-Luc Ponty and Chet Baker places him in the pantheon of international jazz royalty. His stateside trips are rare, which makes his performance next month at Jazz at Kitano an extra special occasion."

It has almost been 20 years since Belgian jazz guitarist and European jazz legend Philip Catherine has performed in the United States!

In 1972 he came over for the first time to study with Mick Goodrick and George Russel at Berkley College of Music in Boston. In 1978 he played a duo set at a Newport Jazz Festival special event at Carnegie Hall together with Larry Coryell opposite pianist Bill Evans.

In 1989 he performed at the Wolftrap Festival together with Stephane Grapelli in a concert that also featured Mstislav Rostropowitch and Yehudi Menuhin.

Philip Catherine and Martin Wind started their duo in 2013 when they were invited to join forces on an album for the fabulous label ACT Records in Munich.

They recorded mainly original compositions, but also Standards such as "Old Folks", "How deep is the Ocean" or Dexter Gordon's "Fried Bananas".

On their two NYC area appearances Philip and Martin will be joined by one of today's most exciting and imaginative drummers on the scene: Matt Wilson!

The "Süddeutsche Zeitung" wrote in a review of a duo concert at the Club of the "Bayerischer Hof" in Munich:

"It all complemented each other rather perfectly: Philip's style that is unique in its technique and always lyrical, and the big and sonorous sound of Martin's bass, no matter if plugged or bowed. They picked a wide and cultivated repertoire: whether they played Hoagy Charmichael or Bebop Standards, Blues or Villa-Lobos, Paul McCartney or original compositions – both musicians always looked for the ideal musical gesture and the right approach for each note. It was not by chance that "Old Folks" might have possibly been the most beautiful song of the concert: quite simple and traditional, without flashy virtuosity, but with a wonderful indulgence of sound resulting from their improvising unity and partnership. We can look forward to the release of the album."(Oliver Hochkeppel)
