Bold New Book for Kids Teaches About Bebop's Creators!

A bold new book by New York Times-bestselling author Gary Golio and Caldecott Medalist Ed Young tells the story of Bebop's creators as they juggle notes and chase each other with sounds. In a remarkable format that mirrors its subjects' innovative style, Bird & Diz can be read page-by-page or opened up accordion-style and enjoyed as a 12-foot-long foldout (which is then turned over). A tribute to friendship as well as creativity, Bird & Diz is a work of art created by two modern friends that can be used by parents and educators alike to turn young minds on to jazz!

In the 1940s, best friends Charlie "Bird" Parker and John "Dizzy" Gillespie turned the world of American music on its head by creating Bebop. Playful, boisterous, and revolutionary, this wild new form of music relied on quick thinking and fast playing, with rhythms that caught its listeners by surprise and stuck in their heads. It wasn't meant for dancing, but to stir up people's hearts and brains, and shake their ears. In Bird and Diz, Golio's rhythmic narration and Young's dance-on-the-page illustrations make for an evocative celebration of music, art, and words.

Be-bop-a-skoodley Doo-wa!

The book has received stars from Publishers Weekly and School Library Journal, and a rave review from Kirkus, which called it "Exuberant and gorgeous-like the music."

"The book's language and images are every bit as vibrant as the music they celebrate."
*Publisher's Weekly

"The free verse is arranged to conjure speed and playfulness...the music pulsing across the gutters, climaxing in a rainbow of percussion."
*School Library Journal
