Introducing The Fulminate Trio: Downtown all-stars release new album

The NYC downtown sound comes full circle and is re-founded with the Unseen Rain Records release of "Triangulation" by The Fulminate Trio. The ensemble unites the strongest improvisational talents in this creative music which bridges free jazz to new composition and repels genre classification. ANDERS NILSSON's deeply emotive and astonishingly agile guitar excursions burst into the masterful and thoroughly commanding upright bass of KEN FILIANO as MICHAEL EVANS' anarchistic drums and percussion encircle the foray, claiming a world of daring, new sounds. This, if nothing else, is a music of the moment, one dedicated in raw emotion to the times in which we live.

FULMINATE:|ˈfo͝olməˌnāt, ˈfəl-|

verb [ no obj. ] to express vehement protest; to explode violently or flash like lightning; sudden onset

Critics have struggled to accurately describe the resultant sounds. Bill Milkowski, writing in "Jazz Times" magazine, described the Trio's 2007 independent release as, "a delicate acute-listening dynamic for half of this experimental ECM-ish program, but they are also capable of exploding with rock-fueled dissonance and bombast". Uber-hip radio station WFMU called the Fulminate experience, "A sonic blast of sublime confrontations. Will insight dreams and deliriums. Free and out. Exploring the realms of open jazz. Elements of rock and free music step over the line here...". While AllAboutJazz said of the Trio, "A strong collective group aesthetic prevails, resulting in dense soundscapes". More to the point Downtown Music Gallery's Bruce Gallanter wrote, "All I can say is Wow! This is a most impressive trio offering that appears to defy categorization and remains engaging throughout".

The Fulminate Trio were founded in 2006, performing a wide range of concerts in their New York City home base. The band has also performed abroad including a 2009 set at the KopaFest in Malmo, Sweden. On their new release, "Triangulation" (Unseen Rain Records UR9949) the trio performs original compositions ranging from forlorn ballads to heated interplay—as well as a reconstruction of a Buffy Sainte-Marie song. With disciplined, fine-tuned restraint both compositionally and improvisationally, each side of the triangle is transitional. "Triangulation" is a metaphor of the three sides in flux, shape-shifting over each sound, each silence. The listening experience is overtaken only by the visual, as the tapestry of colors and motion become one. Claiming the stage, the Fulminate Trio conjure the fire god.
