Juilliard Jazz Presents "The Real Bebop"

Juilliard Jazz presents The Real Bebop featuring Juilliard Jazz Ensembles on Tuesday, November 4, 2014 at 8 p.m. in Paul Hall (155 West 65th Street, NYC). Trumpeter Jon Faddis is guest coach; Elio Villafranca and Frank Kimbrough are faculty coaches. Extremely limited free tickets are available at events.juilliard.edu.

Members of Juilliard Jazz Ensemble A, coached by Frank Kimbrough, are: Braxton Cook, alto saxophone; Enrique Sanchez, trumpet; Jeffrey Miller, trombone; Lake Jiroudek, guitar; Joseph Doubleday, vibraphone; Jahaan Sweet, piano; Karl Kohut, bass; and Douglas Marriner, drums. They will perform Bebop (Dizzy Gillespie, arr. Braxton Cook), Groovin' High (Dizzy Gillespie, arr. Jahaan Sweet), I Can't Get Started (Vernon Duke, arr. Enrique Sanchez), Oop Bop Sh'Bam (Dizzy Gillespie, arr. Douglas Marriner), Hot House (Tadd Dameron, arr. Joseph Doubleday), Max is Makin' Wax (Charlie Parker, arr. Karl Kohut), Quasimodo (Charlie Parker, arr. Jeffery Miller), Ornithology (Charlie Parker and Benny Harris, arr. Lake Jiroudek) and Blue'n Boogie (Dizzy Gillespie and Frank Paparelli, arr. by the ensemble).

Members of Juilliard Jazz Ensemble C, coached by Elio Villafranca, are: Taylor Herron, alto saxophone; Anthony Orji, baritone saxophone; Riley Mulherkar, trumpet; Kalia Vandever, trombone; Jaehun Kang and Joel Wenhardt, piano; Russell Hall, bass; and Cameron MacIntosh, drums. They will perform Dizzy Atmosphere (Dizzy Gillespie, arr. Riley Mulherkar), Chasin' the Bird (Charlie Parker, arr. Taylor Herron). A Night in Tunisia (Dizzy Gillespie and Frank Paparelli, arr. Elio Villafranca), 'Round Midnight (Thelonious Monk, arr. Joel Wenhardt), Confirmation (Charlie Parker, arr. Cameron MacIntosh), and Ko-Ko (Charlie Parker).

About Jon Faddis

Guest coach, trumpeter Jon Faddis is one of the most innovative and inspiring jazz trumpeters of our time. He has an unfailing commitment to the education of your musicians and frequently conducts clinics and master classes to help the next generation of jazz musicians. In 1999, Mr. Faddis was appointed artist-in-residence in the Conservatory of Music at Purchase College, State University of New York, where he teaches in both the brass and jazz programs.

About Juilliard Jazz

Now in its 13th season, Juilliard Jazz offers degrees at bachelor, master, and Artist Diploma levels. The program aims to development exceptionally educated musicians versed in the Jazz continuum and its American vernacular roots. Through improvisation, swing, and the blues aesthetic, Juilliard Jazz nurtures and cultivates individuality, community, and the depth of feeling and generosity of spirit known as soul. Juilliard Jazz students are empowered to realize their highest aspirations as people, artists, and citizens.

The curriculum combines tailored studio and coursework with professional performance opportunities designed to successfully integrate students into a thriving jazz environment. In addition, its faculty and students conduct national and international master classes and clinics.

Today, the Juilliard Jazz Orchestra and its ensembles play more than 50 performances annually, including appearances at the Detroit Jazz Festival and New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival, and tour to destinations such as Costa Rica, Colombia, Japan, and Brazil. Juilliard Jazz Ensembles perform regularly at Dizzy's Club Coca-Cola, and the world-renowned Blue Note in New York City. For the past several seasons, they also have enjoyed week-long runs at Jazz at Lincoln Center with guest artist such as Ernie Andrews, Kenny Barron, Tom Harrell, Sean Jones, Lew Tabackin, Gerald Wilson, Bobby Watson, Frank Wes, and others.

These talented Juilliard artists are taught by today's most active, innovation, and respected jazz musicians. The experienced Juilliard Jazz faculty combines a remarkable variety of technical and musical skill, as demonstrated on stages and in recording studios worldwide.

Wynton Marsalis, Jazz at Lincoln Center's managing and artistic director and a Juilliard alumnus, became director of Juilliard Jazz Studies on July 1, 2014.
