When Bebo Valdés was born, the elders in the barrios of Cuba had been born in Africa. Cuba rang with musics African, European, Creole, and North American, while a new Cuban consciousness was continuing its long process of formation through music. Who were Bebo's influences? What was the musical world he grew up in? Through archival, modern, and field recordings, we'll look at Cuban musical culture in the early twentieth century.

Host: Ned Sublette is the author of several books, including Cuba and Its Music: From the First Drums to the Mambo (Chicago Review Press), and is a musician whose recordings include Kiss You Down South (Postmambo). He is the founder of the Center for Postmambo Studies and co-founder of the public radio program Afropop Worldwide Hip Deep.
