Musette Explosion at Cornelia St. Cafe

Musette Explosion at Cornelia St. Cafe (29 Cornelia St (between Bleecker and West 4th St, near 6th Ave) Wednesday, October 30th featuring: Matt Munisteri, guitar & banjo, Marcus Rojas, tuba, Will Holshouser, accordion

Musette Explosion is a group of three New York musicians who explore and expand on the beautiful French accordion and guitar repertoire known as musette. These "swing-waltzes" were written in the mid-20th century by French musicians who were fascinated with jazz. Musette Explosion takes this hybrid repertoire to new places, emphasizing American-style rhythm and improvisation, stretching the simple forms and ornate melodies, and bringing their own luminous original compositions to the table as well. Will Holshouser and Matt Munisteri began getting together to play musettes in the 1990s, recording a couple of the tunes with Matt's band Brock Mumford. A few years later, they decided to add tuba master Marcus Rojas to the mix, a fearless improviser with classical training who can play the role of bass, horn or bird call. Since then, in between their work as side musicians (with Regina Carter, Catherine Russell, Dave Douglas, David Krakauer, Mark O'Connor, and others) they've been playing in clubs around New York. As a trio they backed up Loudon Wainwright III on a recent recording, and Will played on Martha Wainwright's Edith Piaf tribute album.
