Fifth Annual Mingus High School Comeptition and Festival

The Fifth Annual Charles Mingus High School Competition and Festival, Sue Mingus and Justin DiCioccio producers, takes place in New York City, Feb. 15 – 18 at Manhattan School of Music and at the Jazz Standard. Some of the country's most talented young jazz will be participating in workshops, play in jam sessions and competing in both combo and big band categories - performing ONLY Mingus's music. Ten schools, announced in early January, were selected by leading jazz musicians/educators to compete and represent California, Connecticut, Massachusetts, New Jersey, New York, Oklahoma and Wisconsin.

· Saturday, February 16th at Manhattan School of Music offers:

Begins at 12:00 p.m. with Mingus film clips; 1 p.m. features woodwind, rhythm and brass workshops given by members of the Mingus ensembles, and a band director's workshop on Mingus's music taught by Ken Pullig; 2:45 p.m is a student jam session. All sessions are free and open to the public.

· Sunday, February 17th at Manhattan School of Music in John C. Borden Auditorium:

High School Competition - Morning session (9:30 a.m. to 1:15 p.m.) includes the combos followed in the afternoon by big bands. At 5:30 p.m (2:15 p.m. to 5:30 p.m.). At 5:45 the MSM Mingus Ensemble, comprised of award-winning MSM jazz students, and at 6:15 p.m. the Mingus Dynasty will be showcased; Awards Ceremony at 6:45p.m.

· February 15 – 18 Mingus Ensembles at the Jazz Standard
