| Stephanie Jordan joins New Orleans’ All-star lineup for Hurricane Sandy Relief Concert New Orleans jazz vocalist Stephanie Jordan will join a star studded lineup of New Orleans musicians in a benefit concert which takes place at 7:00 PM on Tuesday, November 20th at the Mahalia Jackson Theater for a night of fantastic local music to raise funds for victims of Hurricane Sandy. In addition to Stephanie and her brother Marlon Jordan; the lineup includes Dumpstaphunk, Kermit Ruffins, Irvin Mayfield, Big Sam's Funky Nation, George Porter Jr., Amanda Shaw, Big Chief Monk Boudreaux, Big Chief Bo Dollis Jr., Stephanie Jordan Ensemble, Terence Higgins, Dirty Dozen Brass Band, Mia Borders, Corey Henry, James Andrews, the Stooges Brass Band, Khris Royal and Sasha Masakowski. The NOLA Pay It Forward Concert is organized by New Orleans Mayor Mitch Landrieu as a means of returning the favor to the East Coast for their efforts in helping New Orleans recover for the devastation caused by Hurricane Katrina with a similar musical effort organized by Wynton Marsalis which raised millions to assist Gulf Coast musicians. "As you all remember, people from the East Coast were there for us after Hurricane Katrina devastated New Orleans. Now it's time to pay it forward" say Landrieu. Stephanie Jordan, whom critics have placed in the company of Nancy Wilson, Abbey Lincoln, and Diana Krall, began to receive noted prominence following the national televised Jazz at Lincoln Center Higher Ground Hurricane Relief Benefit Concert for victims of Hurricane Katrina. "After Hurricane Katrina, an extraordinary cohort of singers-among them, in no particular order, Shirley Caesar, Aaron and Arthur Neville, Cassandra Wilson, Diane Reeves, Elvis Costello, Diana Krall, Norah Jones, James Taylor, and Bette Midler-convened at the Rose Theatre to perform a benefit relief concert for the victims of the catastrophic. On that memorable night; none sang with greater authority or emotional resonance than Stephanie Jordan, who enthralled the packed house and a national PBS NPR audience of millions with an ascendant reading of "Here's To Life." Bill Milkowski of JazzTimes Magazine labeled her "the real discovery of the evening . . ." Jordan said that she is "grateful and remembers how so many strangers helped her during her period of recovery and rebuilding, and is pleased to be able to give back. I can only hope that the compassion that I received is returned many times more." Marlon who spent 5-days trapped on a roof-top during Katrina adds, seeing the images of Sandy brought back memories of my experience. When Stephanie told me that they were looking for musicians to volunteer their services, I said count me in." Being part of a thank you delegation is not new for the Jordans, following Katrina, Stephanie and Marlon Jordan embark during the fall of 2005 as 'Jazz Ambassadors' on a European Tour sponsored by the U.S. Department of State and Jazz at Lincoln Center to thank the people of Europe for their support of New Orleans and the Gulf Region. The countries included Bucharest, Germany, Lithuania and Ukraine. Money raised with this New Orleans' concert will go to the NOLA Pay it Forward Fund at the Greater New Orleans Foundation (GNOF). It will be used to support non-profit organizations assisting in Hurricane relief and recovery efforts. Tickets for the event are $50 per person and are available at Ticketmaster by calling 1-800-745-3000 or online at www.ticketmaster.com. On every ticket sold, Ticketmaster will donate $3.90 of its service fee to the NOLA Pay it Forward Fund. write your comments about the article :: © 2012 Jazz News :: home page |
