Jeff Ballard Fairground is a constantly changing onfiguration - an extension of all the kinds of music he loves to play played but the musicians he loves. Featuring Jeff Ballard (drums), Eddie Henderson (trumpet), Kevin Hays (piano and Rhodes), guitarist Jeff Parker, and Larry Grenadier (bass).

Jeff Ballard

After playing with Ray Charles from 1988 - 1990, Jeff Ballard began playing with: Buddy Montgomery, Lou Donaldson, Kurt Rosenwinkel, Avishai Cohen, Jason Lindner, Guillermo Klein y Los Guachos, the Maria Schneider Orchestra, Mike Stern, Ben Allison, Danilo Perez, Chick Corea's bands Origin and The New Trio, Joshua Redman's Elastic Band, the collective group FLY; and recently with The Brad Mehldau Trio and the San Francisco Jazz Collective. Jeff has been a co-leader of the collective group FLY with Larry Grenadier and Mark Turner, producing three extraordinary recordings: Fly (Savoy) 2004; Sky And Country (ECM) 2009; and Year Of The Snake (ECM) 2012.

Eddie Henderson (trumpet)
Henderson is one of today's top and most original jazz trumpet players. Henderson was born in New York City October 26, 1940. Louis Armstrong gave Eddie his first few trumpet lessons at the age of nine. Eddie moved with his family to San Francisco when he was 14 years old. He studied at the San Francisco Conservatory of Music from 1954 to '56. Around 1956, Miles Davis was guest at Eddie Henderson's home during a black Hawk Jazz Club gig and was impressed with Eddie's ability to perform his famous
"Sketches of Spain" without a fluff but encouraged Henderson to seek his own originality. Henderson first got worldwide recognition for his jazz-trumpet playing from the popular recordings he made with Herbie Hancock's Mwandishi group during the early '70s. other jazz performers Eddie has played with include Pharaoh Sanders, Art Blakey, Elvin Jones, Johnny Griffin, Slide Hampton, McCoy Tyner, Benny Golson, Max Roach, Jackie McClean, Dexter Gordon, Roy Haynes, Joe Henderson etc. Henderson has been on the faculty at Juilliard School of Music since 2007.

Kevin Hays (piano, Rhodes)

Hays, an accomplished jazz pianist and composer, has now recorded over a dozen CD's as a leader and has been featured on many recordings as a sideman. His recordings have been listed as among the 'Top 40 Jazz Releases of the Year' by Musician Magazine and praised by The New York Times. In the mid-nineties, he began recording for Blue Note Records and made several critically acclaimed CDs for that label. In addition to recording and touring with his trio (which includes bassist Doug Weiss and drummer Bill Stewart), Kevin has long been considered 'first call' by some of the most prominent and influential musicians in Jazz. These include Sonny Rollins, John Scofield, Benny Golson, Roy Haynes, Chris Potter, Al Foster, Joe Henderson and Joshua Redman.

Jeff Parker (guitar)

Parker is an electric guitarist and sculptor of sonic textures. Since 1990, he has focused on being adaptable in musical environments that are constantly changing; he is an improvising musician. Recognized as one of contemporary music's most versatile and innovative electric guitarists, his music is characterized by ideas of angularity and logic. He works in a variety of mediums, from jazz to contemporary music, using ideas informed by innovations and trends in both popular and experimental music. He creates works that explore and exploit the contrary relationships between tradition and technology, improvisation and composition, and the familiar and the abstract. He is a founding member of the critically acclaimed and innovative groups Isotope 217° and Chicago Underground, and a longtime member of the band Tortoise.

Larry Grenadier (bass)

Grenadier was born in San Francisco in 1966. He began playing bass when he was 11, and as a teenager worked in the Bay area with Joe Henderson, Stan Getz, Bobby Hutcherson among many others. After playing with Gary Burton's band in 1990, he moved to New York City and played in the groups of Betty Carter, Joshua Redman, Danilo Perez, Tom Harrell, Joe Henderson, John Scofield, Pat Metheny, Paul Motian, Charles Lloyd and Brad Mehldau and recorded dozens of albums. Previous ECM credits include the above-mentioned Rava disc and three albums with Charles Lloyd. Enrico Rava recently described Larry's playing as "present and focused in every moment". Larry is also a member of the collective trio, Fly, along with Mark Turner and Jeff Ballard. Their latest recording, Year Of The Snake, was released in 2012 on ECM.
