The Ébène Quartet

The versatile and genre-bending Ébène Quartet will be featured on "A Weekend in Paris, " with a jazz concert at 6:30 pm on Saturday, Aug. 18, and a concert of classical string quartet repertoire on Sunday, Aug. 19, at 4:00 pm. Ébène (pronounced ay-ben) is the French word for ebony, and the quartet plays contemporary jazz that has roots in the Parisian Hot Club sound of Django Reinhardt and Stephane Grapelli. The quartet's members are conservatory-trained string players, but the cellist plays piano in a jazz quartet, the second violinist is a drummer, and the violist also plays guitar. From "promising young ensemble, " the Quatuor Ébène has grown to become one of the foremost quartets on the international scene. Recently it was selected to take part in the BBC's "New Generation Artists" program, and it has been heard throughout Europe, Asia, and the United States. In 2010, the quartet released an album of jazz and world music titled Fiction.
