Julia Keefe Brings Mildred Bailey Back To New York

Two performances in New York City by jazz vocalist Julia Keefe (Nez Perce) will continue her campaign seeking the induction of Mildred Bailey (Coeur d'Alene) into the Neshui Ertegun Jazz Hall of Fame at Lincoln Center. On August 2nd Julia will open a 4 PM outdoor concert at the Smithsonian National Museum of the American Indian at the historic Alexander Hamilton U. S. Custom House (One Bowling Green, NYC) with other Native American artists as part of the museum's "Native Sounds Downtown" series.

The event also marks the opening of an exhibit entitled "Up Where We Belong: Native Musicians in Popular Culture" that features Mildred Bailey and her work. Saturday, August 4th, Julia will perform two sets of Mildred Bailey standards at Culturefix (9 Clinton Street, Lower East Side). Keefe will be accompanied on piano in both performances by Frost School of Music classmate Emmet Cohen. "Seventy years ago, Mildred Bailey had a successful and critically acclaimed show at Café Society here in New York. Jazz clubs may come and go, but great jazz lives on, and I am excited to be bringing "Rocking Chair" and some of Mildred's other hits back to the city, " Keefe said.
