Charles Mingus High School Competiton and Festival to take place in New York City

The Fourth Annual Charles Mingus High School Competition and Festival, Sue Mingus and Justin DiCioccio co-producers, takes place in New York City, Feb. 17 – 20. This year's competition and festival celebrates Charles Mingus's 90th Birthday Anniversary. (Mingus was born on April 22, 1922.)

The Mingus High School Competition will be bringing some of the country's most talented young jazz musicians to New York City, many of whom have been introduced to Mingus's music for the first time. They will be performing Mingus's music in both combo and big band categories. Ten schools, announced in early January, were selected by leading jazz musicians/educators to compete. They hail from California, Connecticut, Massachusetts, New Jersey, New York and Wisconsin.

Saturday, February 18:
At Manhattan School of Music beginning at 12:00 p.m. will be an hour of Mingus film clips followed at 1 p.m. with woodwind, rhythm and brass workshops given by members of the Mingus ensembles as well as a conducting workshop on Mingus's music taught by Gunther Schuller, Justin DiCioccio and Carl Atkins. All sessions are free and open to the public.

Sunday, February 19:
At Manhattan School of Music the all-day high school competition takes place. The day begins at 10 am with the combo categories followed by the big bands competing in the afternoon. At 5:30 p.m., the Mingus Dynasty (with Alex Foster, Seamus Blake, Philip Harper, Ku-umba Frank Lacy, Helen Sung, Boris Koslov and Donald Edwards) will be showcased in a free concert at the School. An Awards Ceremony follows at the conclusion of the Mingus Dynasty concert.

And, the Charles Mingus Festival includes additional events produced by Let My Children Hear Music/The Charles Mingus Institute:
Saturday, Feb. 18 at 7:30 p.m. at St. Bartholomew's Church (Park Avenue at 50th Street) a FREE concert will be given by the Mingus Orchestra conducted by Gunther Schuller showcasing Mingus's music where it all began – the Church.

February 17 – 20 offers:
At the Jazz Standard will be four evenings of Mingus music. Friday, Saturday and Sunday (February 17, 18 and 19) will offer the Mingus Big Band and on Monday, February 20 will be the Mingus Orchestra.
