Dallas Museum of Art Celebrates the Women of Jazz

Join the Dallas Museum of Art for a month-long celebration of the women of jazz music during Thursday Night Live's Jazz in the Atrium program. Each concert features area and national ensembles with female bandleaders celebrating the history of women in jazz; from Mary Lou Williams to Ella Fitzgerald, from Dianne Reeves to Esperanza Spalding, female jazz artists have made many important contributions to jazz music.

The special Jazz in the Atrium performances are part of the Art in October celebration in the Arts District. DFW musician Tatiana Mayfield kicks off the tribute on Thursday, October 6, followed by jazz harpist Cindy Horstman & 2tone on October 13, Japanese native Yuka Tadano and YT little d on October 20, and finally the Dallas-based Carolyn Lee Jones Quartet on October 27.

Tatiana Mayfield
Thursday, October 6, 6:00-8:00 p.m.

Smooth, refreshing, and unique is how many have described the sound of the Tatiana Mayfield Quintet, led by the 22-year-old jazz vocalist from Fort Worth. In fall 2009, she released her debut album, From All Directions, a collaboration album with pianist Erskine Hawkins III. Mayfield now leads her own band, the Tatiana Mayfield Quintet, and performs throughout the Dallas–Fort Worth area.

Cindy Horstman & 2tone
Thursday, October 13, 6:00-8:00 p.m.

Uncommonly creative and thoroughly enjoyable, 2tone blends the magic of the electric jazz harp and the rhythmic strength of the electric bass in perfect harmony. Jazz harpist Cindy Horstman and bassist Michael Medina formed 2tone seventeen years ago and together they create electric blends of exciting, smooth, soothing, and sultry music ranging from works by Sting, the Beatles, Stevie Wonder, and Pat Metheny, along with some originals. 2tone will be joined by guest musicians for this special Art in October performance.

Yuka Tadano and YT little d
Thursday, October 20, 6:00-8:00 p.m.

Japanese native Yuka Tadano is one of the rising talents in the jazz world on both acoustic and electric bass. Tadano possesses a musical grace and sensitivity that has made her in demand in both the DFW and New York City jazz scenes. Tadano and her band, YT little d, create a fresh, bold sound by combining the cultural diversity of the band members' backgrounds with their mutual love of jazz.

The Carolyn Lee Jones Quartet
Thursday, October 27, 6:00-8:00 p.m.

Carolyn Lee Jones is an accomplished vocalist based in Dallas. An outstanding repertoire and terrific musicians in her band back up her smooth vocal style. Songs from the Great American Songbook, Broadway, jazz, and contemporary retro pop with a jazzy sensibility are the main ingredients. Whether singing swinging standards, beautiful ballads, or upbeat pop tunes, Jones embraces her audience and the music with heart.
