Stompy Jones To Bring “Rompin’, Retro-Style Jazz” to Firehouse Arts

Known for their improvisations and explosive stage show, the six members of Stompy Jones will bring their retro-style "jump" sound to Pleasanton on July 17.

The Firehouse Arts Center will host San Francisco-based sextet Stompy Jones on July 17.

Stompy Jones is renowned for its rhythm, improvisations, charm, retro style and explosive stage show, according to a Firehouse Arts Center press release.

"Whether appearing at a supper club, concert hall, festival or tavern, the group is committed to delivering the romping, joyous, style of jazz that came to be known as rock and roll, " the release said.

Stompy Jones came into existence in 1998 at the Hi Ball Lounge in San Francisco when the owner agreed to host a swing jam session on Tuesday nights. After a month of Tuesdays, a six-piece jump band was formed to re-create the unique blues sound of Louis Jordan and the Tympany Five.

Stompy Jones strives for the small group sounds of the 1940s and to combine those vintage musical elements with the contemporary sensibility that is the Stompy Jones sound.

Little David Rose on stand-up bass, Lee Beary on drums and pianist Scott Lawrence provide the rhythmic foundation of the band's jump style. Trumpeter Robert Dehlinger and saxophonist Erv Ervin create the "fireworks" of vintage rhythm and blues. And the vocals of Christopher Binnings have become a trademark of Stompy Jones.
