Newport Folk Festival Announces Lineup Additions/changes

Poised for a potential sell out, the 2011 Newport Folk Festival announces the additions of Sallie Ford & The Sound Outside and Chris Thile & Michael Daves. With a captivating female lead and a polished, vintage, full band sound, Sallie Ford & The Sound Outside make for a vibrant addition to Newport Folk Festival's Saturday lineup. In the last year, Sallie Ford & The Sound Outside has toured and performed alongside Newport Folk Festival favorites such as The Decemberists, The Avett Brothers, and Mavis Staples, making them a welcome and natural addition to the Newport Folk Family, while contributing to the buzz behind the potential for impromptu artist sit ins and unexpected, on-site pop up performances that the Newport Folk Festival is famous for.

Chris Thile & Michael Daves will come to Newport on Sunday, to join labelmates Wanda Jackson, The Secret Sisters, and Pokey LaFarge & The South City Three, all of whom are signed to Jack White's Third Man Records. The pair's 2011 debut album, "Sleep with One Eye Open, " is an impassioned collaboration/conversation in bluegrass between mandolin virtuoso Chris Thile, known for his associations with Nickel Creek and Punch Brothers, and guitarist Michael Daves. Personifying the spirit of the Newport Folk Festival, the upstart duo can acknowledge history and tradition while exuberantly defying convention, and, being a collaboration in the truest sense, add to the potential for sit ins and other surprising, special moments only seen at Newport. While their debut collaboration is deeply rooted in the history of bluegrass, it is the hearty, latenight, musician and aficionado bluegrass traditions of New York City that ultimately brought these two together.

The Newport Festivals Foundation continues to build on the festival's historic past by featuring emerging young artists alongside some of folk music's most venerable names. This year's festival features: The Decemberists, Emmylou Harris, Elvis Costello, Gillian Welch, Amos Lee, Earl Scruggs, Ramblin' Jack Elliot, Gogol Bordello, M. Ward, Wanda Jackson, Mavis Staples, Tegan & Sara, The Felice Brothers, Carolina Chocolate Drops, Justin Townes Earle, Delta Spirit, Middle Brother, The Wailin' Jennys, Freelance Whales, The Secret Sisters, Trampled by Turtles, The Civil Wars, The Head & The Heart, Pokey LaFarge & The South City Three, The Cave Singers, What Cheer? Brigade, Mountain Man, David Wax Museum, Devil Makes Three, Song Circle with Dar Williams Ellis Paul John Gorka & Liz Queler, Typhoon, Sallie Ford & The Sound Outside, Chris Thile & Michael Daves, The Seeger Clogging All-Stars, BrownBird, River City Extension and PS22 Chorus.

Often likened to "coming home" to the very roots of the folk-music tradition, the Newport Folk Festival is an annual favorite of fans and musicians alike. The laid back, at home feel has been known to inspire artists' spontaneous, on-stage sit-ins as well as unforgettable, once-in-a-lifetime, impromptu performances throughout the festival grounds.
