Michele Rosewoman's New Yor-Uba featuring Pedro Matinez

Painted Bride's Jazz on Vine series in association with Habana | Harlem presents world-renowned pianist-composer Michele Rosewoman's New Yor-Uba ensemble: A Musical Celebration of Cuba in America—a 10-piece ensemble including featured member, Grammy-nominated Pedro Pablo Martinez alongside fellow masters from the contemporary jazz and Cuban folkloric scenes. The performance takes place Saturday, October 23, 8pm.

New Yor-Uba salutes the Orishas (Yoruba deities) with a distinctive repertoire which fuses Ms. Rosewoman's original contemporary jazz compositions-arrangements with Yoruba (Nigerian) and Arará (Dahomey) chants which are centuries-old. Traditional brass and rhythm sections native to jazz are complemented by key Afro-Cuban cultural elements including three bata and conga drummers, traditional vocals and dance movement. New Yor-Uba's concept and sound is vital and fresh—through artistic investigation it reflects and explores the links between these profound musical traditions. As leader, Rosewoman continues to enhance the ensemble's repertoire with new music interpreted by her 10-piece ensemble. While paying homage to the ancestors, New Yor-Uba also continues to push world music boundaries, forge and expand a following for the future.
