Memorial for Carl Leukaufe to be Held at Chicago's Jazz Showcase

Carl Leukaufe, a vibraphonist who was considered a treasure of the Chicago jazz scene for the past several decades, passed away on August 18 after a brief illness. He was 76. Hazel, his wife of 53 years, passed away in November, 2009. A memorial to celebrate his life and music will take place on Monday, October 11 at 8pm at Chicago's Jazz Showcase. The Jazz Showcase is located at 806 South Plymouth Court in Chicago. Leukaufe's daughter Susan and son Paul are hopeful that musicians who have known and worked with their dad over the years will bring their instruments to the memorial and honor his memory with music.

Leukaufe had been scheduled to perform at the upcoming 2010 Chicago Jazz Festival as part of a three-vibrophone group when he was hospitalized on July 25. That performance will now be dedicated to Leukaufe. Considered to be a master of the vibraphone, he began his musical career playing the piano but switched to the vibes at age 15 when his brother, a talented pianist who performed with Coleman Hawkins, brought home a set of vibes. He was, for the most part, self-taught but always credited jazz icon Charlie Parker for providing the greatest influence over his musical development. Throughout his career, he strived to bring both sound and emotion to every performance. The CD, Carl Leukaufe, Warrior, produced by Delmark Records in 1996, demonstrates that he clearly accomplished his goal.

Friends who wish to participate in the evening's musical tribute to Leukaufe are encouraged to send an email to the family at kleukaufe@colum.edu or phone 773-401-6373.
