Reggae on the Beach in Jamaica Wins the 2010 Lonely Planet Awards

Readers of Lonely Planet Magazine and web site voted Reggae on the beach in Jamaica as the Greatest Cultural Experience. The award was announced in August 2010. Reggae on the beach in Jamaica placed first, ahead of ballet at the Mariinsky Theatre in St. Petersburg, salsa dancing in Havana, opera in Italy, and authentic blues in Chicago.

More than three thousand, five hundred respondents took part in the survey which Lonely Planet described as the travel awards with a difference as they celebrate the experiences that inspire us all to travel.

Richard Koss, Lonely Planet author, offered his interpretation of Regge on the beach in Jamaica as a night on the Black Sand Beach, an isolated cove about a half an hour walk from River Lodge, West of Robin's Bay in St. Mary. Koss described lying in a hammock at the Natural Vibes bar overlooking the sea with a beer in hand and reggae music drowning out the pounding of the waves as unbelievably soothing.

Reggae music is certainly part and parcel of the Jamaican culture and it is difficult to go anywhere on the island and not find a small local band, sound system or bar that plays the current hits or oldtime favourites.

Mysilversands did not need this award to recognize the huge part that reggae music plays in Jamaica's tourist industry. The managing director, Prem Chadesingh, stated: "Many of our visitors first think of a Jamaica vacation after falling in love with the muisc of the island. For some a visit to Jamaica without paying their respects to Bob Marley, the king of reggae, at Nine Mile would be unthinkable. When our guests settle in, they want to listen to reggae music, and they prefer a small live band."

He went on to say that, since Silver Sands is a quiet relaxing villa and cottage resort, Mysilversands decided to repsond to this desire of many guests by offering a free night out in Montego Bay on the Hip Strip where they could enjoy the local nightlife including a live band at the Coral Cliff Resort.

Mysilversands also hosts parties for special occasions. Recently, Jamaica's Independence was celebarated with DJ Tyrone performing on the patio at the Silver Sands beach. And from time to time, a reggae band is engaged to play right on the Silver Sands beach, the focal point of these Jamaica villas.

Many of Mysilversands guests hire small local reggae bands to play at their Silver Sands villas. Two of the favourites are Power House and Leroy's Reggae Band. And it is not just large groups that hire these bands - their charge is so reasonable that it is not unusual for a honeymooning couple to hire a reggae band to play only for them at their Jamaica villa.
