Angel Band's Haitian Vodou, Sequins And Fundraising

Nancy Josephson has always found spiritual icons intriguing. That's why she named her female vocal trio Angel Band, and why the cover art of their new album 'Bless My Sole, ' out July 27 from Appleseed Recordings, features a sequined pair of cowboy boots embellished with an image of the Virgin of Guadalupe.

The shimmering "eye popping" album image was created by noted Haitian Vodou flag artist Georges Valris. He met Josephson when she first went to Haiti 15 years ago to find artists who were doing work in sequins and beads, mediums that were familiar to her from her own work as a widely collected, prize-winning "outsider" artist specializing in embellished items.

Nancy's Haitian visits led to her writing the book 'Spirits in Sequins: Vodou Flags of Haiti, ' to her initiation in the Vodou religion, and to her joining the board of Haiti's Art Creation Foundation For Children (ACFFC). Angel Band has been supporting ACFFC by selling the children's artwork on tour, and has raised thousands of dollars for relief efforts since the devastating Haitian earthquake earlier this year.
