Susana Baca makes rare Santa Cruz appearance

Grammy-Award winning Afro-Peruvian singer Susana Baca will give a rare, special performance in Santa Cruz, 7 p.m. Saturday, April 17 at the Kuumbwa Jazz Center in a benefit for student scholarships at the Latin American and Latino Studies Department at UC Santa Cruz.

Baca is acclaimed internationally for her passionate fusion of traditional and contemporary forms. Her songs, many including lyrics written by Latin America's, greatest poets, incorporate Peru's folkloric festejo, lando and golpe é tierra with contemporary jazz stylings.

Her songs are poetic rich with evocative imagery, and her voice is delicate yet soulful. She has an elegant and engaging stage presence, gliding gracefully about the stage while singing.

In 2002, Baca won the Latin Grammy Award for Best Folk Album, for her Lamento Negro CD.

In addition to her successful career as an ambassador of Latin American music, Baca and her husband, Bolivian ethnomusicologist Ricardo Pereira, founded the "Instituto Negrocontinuo, " an organization dedicated to collecting, preserving, and nourishing the unique culture, music, and dance developed in Peru by descendants of African slaves.

"I would like to be remembered for my voice, of course, " Baca says. "But also for helping to spread the music of my ancestors—all those people who were never recognized for their work or for their beautiful culture."
