Rich Harney Quintet in Rare Concert Appearance

Austin is looking forward to a rare concert appearance of The Rich Harney Quintet on April 1, 2010 at The Elephant Room. Featuring Rich Harney on piano, and Alex Coke on sax and flutes, this promises to be an unforgettable evening of truly great jazz. Harney, a prolific pianist and composer, has been illuminating the Austin jazz scene as one of its brightest stars for many years.  His remarkable talents as pianist, composer, and vocalist have gained him acclaim from musicians as one of Austin's best kept secrets and from the Austin American-Statesman as "one of Austin's most valuable musical resources."

As one of the bravest and most diverse talents of the Austin/ Amsterdam music communities, Alex Coke has explored everything from Be-Bop to Huddie Ledbetter and beyond. Coke's multifarious bands include the post-bop quintet, The Worthy Constituents, a collaboration with Harney, which won the Best Unsigned Bands Contest from Musician Magazine in 1990. Harney & Coke released Soul Prayers in 2005 and brought their formidable talents together yet again on Harney's last release, Where Love Begins on Aardvark records in 2008.
As members of a musical partnership that spans many decades, a concert with Harney & Coke is all ways an opportunity to see jazz at its best.
For the upcoming concert at the Elephant Room expect many of Harney's original compositions as well as a few tried and true classics.
The Rich Harney Quintet features Bruce Saunders on guitar, Masumi Jones on drums & Pat Harris on doublebass.
