David Gonzalez Performs at the MAC April 3

El Barrio where the call, la llamada a tu pueblo is only thirty-nine cents a minute, plus a three fifty connection charge, and you pay it gladly because Grandmother's voice is honey and you need it to be. – David Gonzalez.

Afro-Cuban rhythms collide with mambo-flavored house grooves, funk, modern jazz and poetry in "City of Dream, " a performance by David Gonzalez and the Poetic License Band at 8 pm Saturday, April 3, on the Mainstage of the McAninch Arts Center at College of DuPage, 425 Fawell Blvd. in Glen Ellyn.

Created and produced by Gonzalez, a highly-acclaimed poet, musician and performance artist, "City of Dreams" features a quintet of New York's hottest Latin jazz musicians, painting a musical and lyrical urban portrait. Through poems and stories "City of Dreams" weaves poems, stories and personal history, drawing audience members into a cultural journey spanning generations.

In addition to the April 3 MAC performance, Gonzalez will be an artist in residence at Washington School in Wheaton April 5 to 9. Throughout his weeklong stay, the poet will hold storytelling and poetry workshops with kindergarten through fifth grade students, culminating in a school assembly and a performance of Gonzalez's critically-acclaimed "Aesop Bops!"

Gonzalez also will hold a master class for College of DuPage theater and speech students and participate in a poetry reading with members of the Fox Valley Reading Council and area elementary school teachers.

"David Gonzalez is an enigmatic performer and I'm thrilled to not only bring him to the Mainstage, but to local classrooms as well. Outreach activities such as these give children early exposure to the arts, fostering an appreciation that hopefully follows them through their lifetimes, " said MAC Director Stephen Cummins.
